THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS - The age of the understatement (ese irresistible ritmillo ruso)

Corría el año 2008 cuando de forma casual escuché una canción en la radio del coche que me impactó por tener un ritmo fuerte y original. Parecía un tema de rock indie, pero con un ritmo pesado y unos coros que, por algún motivo, parecían transportarme a Rusia. Pasaron varios días hasta que volví a escuchar la canción, y esa segunda vez presté más atención y supe que se trataba del single The age of the understatement del grupo británico The Last Shadow Puppets.

El videoclip confirmó lo que había sentido al escuchar la canción la primera vez: es un grupo indie británico, pero la canción suena a Rusia por todas partes.

En el videoclip aparecen Alex Turner (vocalista de Arctic Monkeys) y Miles Kane (exvocalista de The Rascals), quienes decidieron unirse al productor James Ford para grabar un disco libre de ataduras. Turner y Kane compusieron doce canciones y grabaron las guitarras, las voces y las líneas de bajo. Como no sabían tocar la batería, esa labor la realizó el propio productor Ford.

El resultado fue un disco llamado The Age of the Understatement que, aunque en su conjunto me parece bastante irregular, cuenta con esta primera canción homónima que a mí me resulta hipnótica. El single con The age of the understatement, que también incluía Two Hearts in Two Weeks y una versión de Wondrous Place, salió el 8 de abril de 2008 y tuvo bastante éxito en varios países, sobre todo Reino Unido y España.

Después de este primer disco y las consiguientes actuaciones en directo, The Last Shadow Puppets regresaron a la sombra. En teoría el grupo sigue activo, pero sus dos miembros afirman estar demasiado ocupados en otros proyectos como para pensar en grabar un segundo disco. Es una pena porque quizá nos estamos perdiendo otra joya como esta, pero un alivio si el nivel sería el mismo que las canciones de relleno de su primer álbum.
